Defense industry recognizes materiel enterprise workers


During an awards program focused on the innovation and leadership of the region’s defense employees, the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association recognized five members of the Army Materiel Command for their contributions in support of service members deployed in harm’s way.
NDIA presented a Management Award to AMC’s Audra Allen, a strategic planner with AMC’s Commanding General’s Initiatives Group while members of the AMC Commanding General’s Initiative Group Graphics Team – lead designer Mark Jones, and members Amy Turner and Patti Evans – received a Technology Award. AMC’s Col. Christopher Ingels, who is now retired, received a Leadership Excellence Award for his work as the executive deputy for intelligence and security. They were among 19 awards presented at an April 27 awards dinner at Huntsville’s Jackson Center. ....

10th Annual “Plant Natives 2021” Programs To Be Held March 19-21 and March 27

The Tennessee Valley Chapter of the Wild Ones is holding its 10th annual event, “Plant Natives 2021.” This year, there are big changes – an exciting and expanded lineup of speakers AND a new way to obtain a great variety of native plants for spring planting. “Plant Natives 2021!” will consist of three components:
- Virtual Special Seminar | Friday, March 19 | 9 a.m.-noon
- Virtual Symposium & Expo | Friday-Sunday, March 19-21 
- Outdoor Native Plant Marketplace | Saturday, March 27 | 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
This annual event brings gardeners, conservationists, landscape professionals and policy makers together for inspiration and education and focuses on the importance of native plants as the foundation for preserving and promoting biodiversity. Athens police sergeant receives surprise award for ensuring seniors enjoy Christmas


ATHENS-Athens Police Sgt. Katrina Flanagan received a surprise award tonight (Monday, Dec. 14) during the Athens City Council meeting.
 
Chief Floyd Johnson tricked her into attending, and to her surprise, she received a commendation for heroism, or a Hero’s Award, from the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Johnson nominated Flanagan for the annual award for her work to provide Christmas gifts for residents in our local nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
 
Flanagan started the program, Gifts for the Elderly, during the 2018 Christmas season. Her original goal that year was to take 50 gifts to a local assisted living or nursing home to share some Christmas spirit with residents who may not have family and are unfortunately sometimes forgotten at Christmas. On Christmas Eve, she met with several children who helped pass out 125 gifts, more than her goal. ....
