Commissioners to vote on a resolution against critical race theory


In what will be a strictly symbolic gesture, the Craven County Board of Commissioners have agreed to hold a vote on a resolution opposing the teaching or promotion of critical race theory and several other educational tools that seek to shed light on the country’s troubled racial history.
The item will be on the agenda for the board’s August 2 meeting, which will include an opportunity for citizens to voice their comments on the increasingly controversial subjects of critical race theory, action civics and the New York Times Magazine’s The 1619 Project, which are included in the resolution. 
Though the Craven County Board of Commissioners can vote on measures such as the critical race theory resolution, the board has no authority to control the curriculum of county schools.  ....

New Bern mayor signed letter asking legislators to address internet issues


The City of New Bern has taken additional steps to address what officials have described as the poor local broadband service and issues with internet provider Suddenlink.
A letter addressing the issue that was signed by New Bern Mayor Dana Outlaw and eight other mayors was sent to 14 eastern North Carolina legislators last week, including Sen. Norm Sanderson and Rep. Steve Tyson.
The letter urges the legislators to take “aggressive steps to bring better broadband service to our region of state,” including the passage of Senate Bill 547-FIBER NC Act. The bill authorizes counties and cities to build broadband service facilities or equipment for leasing purposes. ....
