Dunleavy Administration Dedicates $2.5M To Chevak Clean Up

The Dunleavy administration is dedicating money to helping Chevak clean up the debris of its old school, which burned down in a fire this spring.
According to a state press release, the $2.5 million will be used to remove asbestos and to look for the remains of two men who might have perished in the fire. The two men, James Tikiun, age 22, and Dennis Slats, age 35, have not been seen after they went missing the night the fire occurred.
The community had hoped to turn the abandoned school into a community center.
The funding to clean up what’s left of the school building will come from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Spill Prevention and Response. The administration plans to take the money out of the state response fund and replace it using federal money from the American Rescue Plan Act. ....

Troopers Release Names Of Missing Chevak Men

State troopers have released the names of the men who went missing after a fire destroyed the old Chevak school last week.
The men are James Tikiun, age 22, and Dennis Slats, age 35. They were discovered missing after the fire, with no signs of having left the village, and have not been seen since. It’s unknown if the men perished in the fire.
The fire happened on March 8. Deputy fire marshals and Alaska State Troopers flew to Chevak to investigate on March 9, and left on March 10. Trooper spokesperson Austin McDaniel said that the investigators determined that the fire started underneath the old school building’s gym, and that the cause remains unknown. ....

Two Chevak men remain missing days after a fire devoured the former school building in the Southwest Alaska community, subsequently causing power outages and leaving many homes without water or sewer.
In the early hours of Monday morning, flames began pouring out of the abandoned school building, Alaska State Troopers said in a statement. The community of just over 1,000 people does not have a fire department and the building was a total loss.
Gretch Chayalkun said she’d fallen asleep Sunday night and woke in the middle of the night to news that the building was on fire. She said she hopped on her snowmachine and headed toward the building, where the blaze had illuminated the night sky orange. Thick smoke hung in the air, she said. ....
