Fort Lupton's First Dispensaries Won't Open for Some Time

During a town hall meeting April 27, however, councilmembers discussed a new time frame for retail marijuana, with a target on late July to open for business applications. According to City Clerk Mari Peña, detailed zoning ordinances regarding where dispensaries can operate within the city will be presented during a public meeting on May 13, with another public meeting about the overall ordinance and general concerns scheduled for May 18.
The dispensary application stage, currently set to start July 23, was supposed to begin in May, but that process has lagged as the council negotiates upgrades for a local wastewater facility.
I know there have been a lot of questions about [marijuana] applications and submittals, but no applications will be accepted until after the effective date of the ordinances, and until after the council approves a process to move forward with, Peña said during the meeting. We should have more information as we get closer to July. ....

$100 Million in Marijuana Tax Money Going Back to Colorado Schools

Following a year of budget cuts and funding rearrangements during the COVID-19 pandemic, Colorado s Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) program is on track to get those funds back from a major revenue source: pot taxes.
Senate Bill 207 passed the Colorado Legislature on April 19, requiring the transfer of $100 million from the state s Marijuana Tax Cash Fund into the BEST program to restore funding cut last year. The 2020 cuts were made to augment the state s General Fund during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Senator Dominick Moreno, a prime sponsor of the bill and chair of the legislature s Joint Budget Committee. But that money will be coming back next year. ....

Lakewood Marijuana Dispensaries Nearing Recreational Sales

Although only five stores have been approved so far, the remaining dispensaries are making sure they don t lag behind. Lakewood only allows existing medical dispensaries in good standing to apply for retail marijuana licenses, and building modification permits are required to separate recreational and medical marijuana sales for businesses that choose to serve both.
Recreational cultivation is also permitted under the ordinance, and Lakewood Public Information Officer Stacie Oulton anticipates heavy interest among business operators.
Ascend Cannabis, a medical dispensary in Lakewood since 2010, recently opened one of Littleton’s first retail marijuana dispensaries but is still waiting on approval from Lakewood to modify its current medical dispensaries for recreational sales, according to owner Scott Embree. ....

Jam Master Jay's Sons Bring Cannabis Brand to Colorado

Hip-hop royalty and Colorado cannabis have collided once again, and this time they re going old-school.
Jason Mizell, better known as Run-DMC DJ Jam Master Jay, was shot in a music studio in New York City in 2002. (After eighteen years, two suspects have been charged for his murder.) But two of his sons, T.J. and Jesse Mizell, have named a pre-rolled cannabis brand in Jay s honor, bringing Jam Master Jays to Native Roots dispensaries.
Sold in retro cassette-tape boxes with Jam Master Jay s photo on the cover, the joints come stuffed with Tahoe OG or East Coast Alien flower, and will be available at the Colorado Boulevard, Speer Boulevard and Tower Road Native Roots stores in Denver, as well as at outlets in Littleton, Frisco and Trinidad. The launch occurred on April 17, with Native Roots and the Mizells bringing along A$AP Ferg to celebrate the product drop. ....

New Pueblo County Jail to Cost Nearly $100 Million, Funded by Marijuana Taxes

For the past six years, Pueblo County voters have turned down proposals to use marijuana tax dollars to fund a new jail. Yet that hasn t stopped the county s commissioners from moving the project, estimated to cost upwards of $90 million, forward.
Pueblo Country voters balked at the idea of using those new funds to build a new county jail and extend a new road named in honor of Joe Martinez, a local Word War II hero. But when voters approved to increase the local sales tax on retail marijuana from 3.5 percent to 6 percent in 2019, the ballot initiative didn t specify where the money would go. As a result, the County Board was able to finally secure the project s funding source without voter approval. ....
