New windows going in old bank building in Angola

ANGOLA — A second set of replacement windows to be installed at the former First National Bank of Angola building on the Public Square started going in on Monday afternoon and appear to be complete, minus some trim. The work comes months after a lawsuit ordered removal of the first set of replacement windows then the February approval by the Angola Historic Preservation Commission of a new set of windows was approved. The HPC is very pleased with how this situation turned out. The company that owns the bank building went from willfully ignoring the City of Angola s laws regarding historic preservation to being quite cooperative, even making changes HPC didn t ask for. It was a refreshing change of attitude, said Lee Sauer, president of the Historic Preservation Commission.

Commissioners want to wait on new jail AUBURN — Two out of three DeKalb County Commissioners made it clear Monday that they do not support building a jail right now. During their weekly meeting at the courthouse in Auburn, Bill Hartman and Todd Sanderson said they want to wait until a spike in construction costs subsides. The commissioners have been considering a new jail seriously since January, when they chose the Elevatus architecture firm of Fort Wayne to design a jail on property at the west edge of Auburn. “I think I can make a good decision today. In fact, I’m not ready to raise taxes to do this,” Hartman said.

HPC seeking to photograph, document farmstead slated for demolition

ANGOLA — The Angola Historic Preservation Commission has decided to write to the Indiana Department of Transportation requesting it be given time to photograph and document a Pleasant Township farmstead before it is bulldozed to make room for a traffic circle. The Commission on Tuesday voted to respond to a letter it received from the state agency about a property at 1025 N. C.R. 200W that is slated for potential demolition as part of an upcoming intersection improvement project. The letter, which was in response to a request for a review of the site to determine if it had historic potential, claimed the 9-acre property, which contains a house and three outbuildings, does not appear to meet the criteria for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and is therefore not worth preserving.
