Province ensuring Job protected leave for workers getting vaccinated

VICTORIA, B.C. – The provincial government has made changes to the
Employment Standards Act, ensuring part and full-time workers can take the needed time to get vaccinated without fear of losing their jobs.
“We need to get British Columbians vaccinated if we want to put this pandemic behind us,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “This safeguard ensures no one will lose their job if they need time away from work to get vaccinated for COVID-19.”
The government is also looking at options to provide workers with paid leave to get their COVID-19 vaccine. The province has initiated discussions with members of British Columbia’s business community, labour organizations, and workers hit hard by the impacts of the pandemic. ....

Mandatory Entry Level Training for class 1 drivers

VICTORIA, B.C. – B.C. has announced the introduction of mandatory entry-level training (MELT) for new Class 1 commercial driver’s license applicants.
According to a release, the program will go beyond minimum requirements set by the National Safety Code Standard for entry-level training of Class 1 drivers.
MELT will become a prerequisite for Class 1 road testing beginning October 18th. The program will utilize best practices from other jurisdictions in Canada, emphasising safe driving for mountainous geography and diverse driving conditions. It will ensure commercial drivers are prepared for the roads and changing weather patterns found in the mountains. ....

Better at Home meal program paid until May

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John and Area Better at Home weekly meals for seniors are now covered until May, thanks to Petronas.
According to Laura Beamish, Program Coordinator with Better at Home, they have a partnership with Aniela’s Kitchen for meals once a week. The meals are brought to different seniors in the area on a rotation. There are 100 seniors involved with meals being given to 50 a week, meaning every two weeks, the seniors get a meal.
Beamish says that Petronas approached them early in the year and were interested in paying out the program until May. She states that if they decide to continue past May, this gives them the chance to fundraise. ....

Rural, remote and Indigenous Northern B.C communities receiving grants to address overdose concerns

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Province has announced that communities and organizations in the Northern Health region will have extra support to expand efforts in overdose response and awareness.
Fort Nelson First Nation and the Society for Narcotic Opioid Wellness (SNOW) have been awarded grants in the Peace region.
“People living in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities are best equipped to address the overdose crisis on the ground in their communities,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “I’m grateful for the wisdom and expertise of community leaders whose innovative projects are making a difference during two public health emergencies.” ....
