2021 AFL grand final: The ultimate preview

After 198 regular season matches, 1,188 Brownlow Medal votes, 4,575 regular season goals (and a further 172 goals in the finals series) and another season impacted by COVID-19, we have finally, very nearly, reached the end of the road. The Western Bulldogs have made a big statement with a 55-point win over West Coast in front of an empty Optus Stadium.
The major talking point pre-game was the WA Government’s decision to ban fans from attending the clash after a COVID case was identified in Perth, but post-game it’ll all surround Luke Beveridge’s impressive side.
The Bulldogs led from start to finish, dominating at both the stoppage and on the scoreboard, with 33 scoring shots to the Eagles’ 13.
Marcus Bontempelli (three goals, 29 disposals), Bailey Smith (two goals, 31 disposals) and Jack Macrae (one goal, 32 disposals) starred in the middle as the Dogs won the clearance count 44 to 29.

There is plenty of ineptness around the league this year, but we can’t write about St Kilda’s lack of heart every week.
It’s time to celebrate the clubs at the pointy end. It’s not often we get a true top-of-the-table clash between the two clear best teams, and they are to be savoured.
With both the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne two games and percentage clear of third, sitting at 9-1 and locks for the top four, there is no doubt that this is a heavyweight bout. There is every chance these teams will meet again in September, and possibly on the last Saturday.

Tim English needed some help. The Western Bulldogs went and got it for him and the early indication is that the athletic big man could cause massive headaches for the rest of the competition in 2021 playing primarily as a key forward.
That was a key takeaway from Wednesday’s practice game against Hawthorn at the Whitten Oval, which resulted in a 15-point win, 15.7 (97) to 12.10 (82) after the Hawks kicked the last four goals of the game.
English kicked two goals but always looked dangerous prowling the forward line, and the Dogs certainly didn’t lose much when 34-year-old Brisbane recruit Stef Martin handled the ruck duties.
