The story of verifying Colorado's all-time record low temperature


A story of a broken car, a broken thermometer, and a broken record.

MOFFAT COUNTY, Colo. Coloradans just experienced a long cold snap with several daily records broken. The lowest temperature in Denver was -16 degrees on Monday, and the lowest temp in the state was -33 in Crook, also on Monday.
That s cold, but nowhere near the all-time state record of -61, which was measured in Maybell on February 1, 1985.
It is the job of climatologists at the Colorado Climate Center to verify temperature records before they can be classified as official, and on that day it was assistant state climatologist Nolan Doesken, his boss, and a meteorologist with the National Weather Service that was tasked with confirming the -61 as a true measurement.  ....

Justin Adams Flora…December 23, 1947 – January 14, 2021 : The Prowers Journal


Justin was born in Lamar, Colorado on December 23, 1947, to Winnie and Lee Flora. Justin loved growing up in Lamar where he began working in the family business, Flora Rexall Drugs, at an early age. After graduating from high school, Justin attended CU where he became a life-long Buffs fan, and later graduated from Regis University. In the years between college and marriage his love of music was expressed in his membership in the rock and roll band, “House of Rhythm.” In those years they played many gigs throughout southeastern Colorado.
He met Elaine Haswell while at CU, she at CSU, and they married in Denver on March 6, 1971. They began their married life in Lamar where Justin was a real estate broker and appraiser. He was involved in many community activities including president of the Planning and Zoning Board and a member of the Honkers. He loved playing softball in the summer and continued that until his boys were of “baseball age,” when he began coaching their t ....

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colorado  Beside a river that winds through a mountain valley, the charred trunks of pine trees lie toppled on the blackened ground, covered in a thin layer of fresh snow.
Weeks after flames ripped through this alpine forest, a smoky odor still lingers in the air.
The fire, called the East Troublesome, burned later into the fall than what once was normal. It cut across Rocky Mountain National Park, racing up and over the Continental Divide. It raged in the headwaters of the Colorado River, reducing thick forests to ashes and scorching the ground along the river’s banks. ....
