Gull Lake’s Taylor Kirwan is currently a pillar on the Colgate University Raiders blueline. The Raiders are the fifth ranked team in the country and Kirwan leads the team with a plus-12 rating. Divers recover body after Chignik Lake boating accident January 7th |
The body of one of the two Chignik Lake men killed in a tragic boating accident the day after Christmas has been recovered by divers. Alaska State Troopers report that the body of Nick Garner, 39, was found Dec. 30, four days after a skiff laden with a snowmachine in its bow hit a large wave and overturned with three men aboard. A four-person volunteer search team with Alaska Dive, Search, Rescue and Recovery flew in from Anchorage. Troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said Monday that divers deployed side-scan sonar to comb the depths of the lake. The sonar device sends bursts of sound into the water, which then bounce off of the ground and other objects. That then reflects back to the sonar unit on the boat, which produces an image. ....

One Succumbs to Cold, One Missing, and One Survives in Chignik Lake Capsize Saturday Afternoon Location of Chignik Lake on Alaska Peninsula. Image-Google Maps AST revealed that five Chignik Lake residents were rescued while one body was recovered and one remains missing after a tragic Saturday afternoon incident there. At 3:16 pm on Saturday afternoon, Fairbanks troopers were alerted that a skiff with three aboard had capsized while transporting a snow machine on its bow after encountering a wave as it transited to the north side of the lake. The small watercraft floated for approximately a half-hour after it capsized with 24-year-old Taylor Lind, 42-year-old Fred Shangin, and 39-year-old Nicholas Garner aboard. After the capsize, Lind was able to reach the ice and self-rescue, but, Shangin, who could not get off the skiff, succumbed to the cold while atop the bottom of the craft.
