Over 3-thousand people participated in the annual Spring Cleanup event in Prince George.
With the final numbers still trickling in, Terri McClymont with REAPS told MyPGNow.com it was a huge success.
“Even having six thousand kilograms of waste out of the bushes, sidewalks, roadways helps us to beautify Prince George and it also stops the litter from going into the river systems.”
Over 25-hundred garbage bags and 29-hundred gloves were handed out to volunteers during the event who covered 350 kilometres.
“We have to keep track of these numbers. We get our bags from Pitching Canada and the City of Prince George provides the gloves so it allows to know what to estimate for next year.” ....

The Earth Day activities laid the groundwork for a small army of volunteers who registered for Sunday’s REAPS (Recycling Environmental Action Planning Society) Spring Clean Up. People descended on parks, parks, river banks, parking lots, roadside gutters/ditches/boulevards and residential neighbourhoods to pick up garbage and beautify the city. They found tires, wood pallets, car parts, appliances and all kinds of paper, metal and plastic waste and piled it up along roadways for city crews to pick up later.
Elm Street residents Tim Graham and Pam Hodson were out Sunday morning with their bright yellow Pitch-In Canada garbage bag picking up litter along Patricia Boulevard on the bank overlooking downtown. The retirees go for walks regularly along that stretch of roadway in their neighbourhood and just wanted to do their part to make those walks more pleasant for people. ....

Five Prince George groups receive financial boost from BC Community Gaming Grants

Non-profits in Prince George are receiving some much-needed funds from B.C.’s Community Gaming Grants program.
“Our government is committed to supporting local organizations involved in a wide variety of activities that contribute to building vibrant, healthy communities,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs.
“This funding ensures community organizations can continue to provide programming to enhance public safety through emergency programs like search and rescue, and to steward and preserve our ecosystems for generations to come.”

It s up to the consumer to decide where to take their returnables and for what amount.
In B.C., there is a 91 per cent return rate for beer cans and bottles because it s a cost that everyone is aware of as they pay it upfront.
And that s why we have such a high return rate of our beverage containers, Terri McClymont, executive director of Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS), said.
The BC Brewers’ Recycled Container Collection Council (BRCCC) is in charge of offering contracts to licensees and depots through Brewers Distributor Ltd. to collect beverage containers at a full refund of 10 cents. ....
