'It's terrible,' mourns family of man who served in Afghanistan only to be slain in St. Louis | Crime and Courts

A 30-year-old MetroLink security guard gunned down Sunday in St. Louis had served eight years as a U.S. Marine, including spending a year in Afghanistan where he saw combat.
The fact that James Cook was shot dead in St. Louis, his mother-in-law said Monday, was particularly heartbreaking.
“What is the irony of that?” Vickie Munton of Sullivan, Missouri, told the Post-Dispatch. “It’s just wrong.”
Cook died after being shot in the face Sunday morning while he worked at the Delmar Loop MetroLink station. Police are searching for his killer.

Cook worked for a private security firm hired by MetroLink. He lived in Sullivan, Missouri, and made the two-hour roundtrip drive to St. Louis several days a week. ....

ST. LOUIS A homicide investigation is underway after a security guard was shot and killed Sunday morning at the Delmar Loop MetroLink station.
Police have identified the guard as 30-year-old James Cook. The suspect was arrested Monday morning at the Hanley Road MetroLink station, according to police sources familiar with the investigation.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the shooting at 10:08 a.m. on Hodiamont Avenue. Officers found Cook shot in the face. He was breathing when police arrived but later died. ....
