Counting of votes for Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls underway


Counting of votes for the panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh began on Sunday morning, an official said.
The counting of votes will continue till all the ballots are counted. The entire process may take two days, a senior SEC official told PTI.
The State Election Commission (SEC) had said the candidates and their agents will be allowed to enter the counting centres only if they have tested negative for COVID-19 in the 48 hours prior to the commencement of the counting process or taken both doses of the vaccine.
The Supreme Court on Saturday had refused to stay the counting process. In a special urgent hearing on a holiday (Saturday), a bench of Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice Hrishikesh Roy passed the order after taking note of several notifications and assurances of the SEC that the COVID-19 protocols will be followed at all the 829 counting centres. ....

New Delhi [India], May 1 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Saturday allowed the process of counting of votes of the Uttar Pradesh Gram Panchayat polls starting tomorrow while taking into note the assurance given by the State Election Commission that necessary measures will be in place in terms of Covid-19 guidelines.
A Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar took into note the submissions of the State Election Commission that Class I gazetted officials will be responsible for adherence to COVID-19 protocol at each counting centre. ....

Amid deadly Covid-19 second wave, Goa's five municipal councils go to polls


Amid a severe spike in Covid-19 cases in the state, voting is underway for elections to five municipal councils in Goa.
According to the State Election Commission, 1.85 lakh voters are eligible to cast ballot for elections to five municipal councils in Mapusa, Margao, Quepem, Sanguem and Mormugao towns.
Elections to six other municipal councils and one municipal corporation were conducted on March 20. The second phase of municipal polls were necessitated after the Bombay High Court, last month, faulted the state government and the State Election Commission for erroneous procedures adopted while reserving municipal constituencies for women, ST, SC and OBCs. ....
