Analysis: Ocean Springs mayor’s runoff a battle of contrasting campaigns Updated 2:21 PM; OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. Come Tuesday night, either Melanie Allen or Kenny Holloway will become the mayor-elect of Ocean Springs, but the two Republicans arrived at this point by very different paths. The two topped a field of five candidates in the April 6 Republican primary, with Allen leading the field with 1,150 votes (35%), with Holloway garnering 901 votes (28%). With neither earning the requisite 50 percent plus one needed to win outright, they headed for a runoff. While both candidates may be Republicans, that’s about where the similarities end. Allen, 68, is a retired businesswoman who relocated to Ocean Springs about 25 years ago after learning about the coastal city through her business dealings. Over the years, she’s been heavily involved in the community, volunteering for a number of different civic and governmental organizations. ....

(WDAM) - Friday was a historic day for Dixie Electric as the company was awarded funding to continue its high-speed internet expansion to rural areas. Chairman Dane Maxwell of the Mississippi Public Service Commission signed and approved $21.7 Million for the DE FastLink Project. “This is our time in history to bring forth the technology, high-speed internet that everybody uses today,” Maxwell said. The DE FastLink Project is Dixie Electric’s fiber internet service launched after the pandemic showed the lack of high-speed internet in rural areas. ....

(WDAM) - Mississippi Public Service Commission Chairman Dane Maxwell issued final documents to PearlComm LLC Monday. Maxwell’s signature marks the allocation of $25.7 million from the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. The fund brings access to high-speed internet service to over 51,000 Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association members across 12 counties. “It’s as big of a deal as providing power to them in 1938 when we were founded,” said Matthew Ware, Chief Executive Officer & General Manager of PRVEPA. “Now we’re giving them a new technology that I think will have the same implications to our membership as it did back then.” ....
