New candidates revealed for relaunched RCN presidential election

The Royal College of Nursing has announced three new candidates who will be running to become its next president as part of a relaunched election process following controversy last year.
The college today confirmed that Denise Chaffer, Professor Rod Thomson and Maria Trewern will be standing for the post.

Ms Chaffer is currently the director of safety and learning at NHS Resolution and is both a registered nurse and midwife by background. Previously, she held roles as a director of education, a director of nursing in both acute hospitals and NHS commissioning and also worked as the national student adivsor at the RCN. ....

Investment in nursing needed to acheive world health targets, says RCN
Nurses have an “essential role to play” in enhancing universal health coverage and achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to a new report launched on World Health Day.
But it warned that investment in the profession was also needed to help staff continue to deliver on these objectives, especially in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The SDGs should underpin post-Covid-19 planning and policy development, with investment in strengthening nursing and midwifery recognised as core to this”

In 2015, United Nations member states agreed to 17 ambitious SGDs which are aimed at delivering transformative change for all people in all countries by 2030. ....
