The Game Commission’s June 18 meeting was a fiasco.
Surprise and confusion were evident on faces, including those of all the commissioners, except for Chair Sharon Salazar Hickey, who caused the commotion.
In an attempt at transparency, the commission chair chose an awkward way to disclose that her daughter is employed by the law firm that represents all applicants attempting to close public waters to New Mexicans.
Yet, she asserted she could be impartial about the five contentious applications before the commission. At her direction, this potential conflict of interest will be studied and a report issued before the commission’s August meeting.
A tribute to David Soules: A man of the land
Mark Allison
David Soules was one of the kindest, most generous people you could ever meet. He had an easy laugh and an infectious boyish enthusiasm, particularly evident when talking about or experiencing southern New Mexico’s public lands and the Chihuahuan desert. He was a passionate presence and would bring his engineer’s brain to bear in long and sometimes obscure but important disquisitions of various issues, both big and small, be they public access, wildlife guzzlers or a proposed transmission line.
At the same time, he was a real listener, with a rare willingness to learn something new. He always had time to sneak away to a quiet corner to compare notes, share thoughts, and scheme together about how to make something better.
Letters to the editor: On David Soules Las Cruces Sun-News
Thank you David Soules
Dr. David Soules leaves behind a legacy as a conservationist, manager, and a historian working to preserve the history not only of the land but also of our national defense.
I knew him as the manager of one of the biggest contracts providing support to White Sands Missile Range’s mission, and also serving as a member of the White Sands Missile Range Historical Museum Foundation. In that capacity, and because of his superb intellect, he provided valuable advice, insight, and was also a source of information in developing strategies on how the foundation could improve its outreach to the communities we serve as well as the many visitors who came from the four corners of the earth. to visit the museum.
