Judging to begin on prestigious farming awards

JUDGING is about to take place for the inaugural Cumbria Farmer Awards.
The awards will be judged by a panel of respected industry and specialists from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.
The finalists will be announced shortly.
The search to find the county’s farming unsung heroes is organised by Newsquest Cumbria in partnership with Carlisle-based business advisers and accountants, Armstrong Watson.
The judging panel is headed by Andrew Robinson, partner and head of agriculture and farming at Armstrong Watson, which is also sponsoring a further category, the Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as the drinks reception.
Andrew, a farmer’s son, born and bred on a large hill farm in north Cumbria, said: “Farming is going through significant change, and, as a firm of accountants and business and financial advisers, we know only too well how important the sector is. ....

System People call for businesses to promote apprenticeships

System People is calling on businesses to help promote apprenticeship opportunities in Cumbria.
The firm reported an 18 per cent increase in learners going into immediate employment upon completing their apprenticeship in 2020, a 71 per cent distinction rate for teaching assistant apprenticeships and 12 per cent increase in distinctions in 2020.
Businesses who have already pledged their support to help young people include Carlisle Youth Zone, Lloyd Motor Group, Peter Tysons, Online Systems, Gelt Gladiator, David Allen Accountants, Slater Tanning Studio and Groundwork Cumbria.
Lloyd Motor Group said: “We have hired apprentices in the past, know that they can be advantageous for a young person starting their career and want to help support the apprentice community in Cumbria. ....

Autumn date to celebrate Cumbria's farming heroes at inaugural Cumbria Farmer Awards

A NEW date has been set for the inaugural Cumbria Farmer Awards.
It had been planned to hold the much-anticipated event in the spring, but Covid-19 has led to the decision to move the event to a new date this autumn.
Entries for the 12 categories will now be reopened until May 4.
Alongside farming’s core sectors - dairy, beef, sheep and machinery - there is also a celebration of talented youngsters coming into the industry.
