PORTLAND, Ore., June 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation today announced $550,000 in grants to 81 nonprofits and school programs throughout Oregon. These grants were made possible through CommuniCare, a year-long leadership program that gives Oregon high school students an opportunity to learn about issues affecting their communities to facilitate a deeper commitment to social activism.

Multnomah County Isn’t Sending Vaccine Clinics to Schools The opportunity is slipping away for health officials to reach teenagers who aren’t actively seeking a COVID-19 vaccination.

One of the most diverse school districts in Oregon asked Multnomah County this month for a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at its high school and was rejected.
David Douglas School District, which covers much of East Portland, sent 95 students via school bus to the vaccination clinic at the Oregon Convention Center on Friday, May 7, a week before vaccinations became available to kids between the ages of 12 and 15. (Portland Public Schools has also sent buses from its high schools.) But county officials turned down the request for a clinic at David Douglas High School. ....

Obituary: Mike Mitchell, guitarist on cult chart hit that FBI probed for hidden obscenities

MIKE Mitchell, who has died aged 77, was a guitarist whose solo on The Kingsmen’s version of Richard Berry’s song, Louie Louie, helped define a sound that helped shift rock and roll out of the school hop and into infinitely rawer territory.
The song was recorded by the teenage band in a three-track studio, where, according to Mitchell in a 1999 interview with John Broughton on Casey Radio, Melbourne, Australia, the Kingsmen’s one-take wonder of Louie Louie and two more songs took an hour all in, costing a cool $36 to make.
The result saw Berry’s three-chord construction ingested with new life as a bratty piece of almost incoherent bubblegum trash that became an inspiration for every garage band in town. Despite the messiness of the recording, it was released as a single in 1963, and eventually spent several weeks at number two in the U.S. charts. ....

Former Oregon prep star Osa Odighizuwa was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2021 NFL draft on Friday.
Odighizuwa, a defensive tackle out of UCLA, was selected in the third round (No. 75) of the draft by the Cowboys.
Odighiuzuwa, the former star at David Douglas High School, posted 30 total tackles, six tackles for loss and four sacks in seven games for the Bruins in 2020. Odighizuwa registered a career year in 2019, with 46 total tackles and 10 tackles for loss in 12 games. ....
