Village Arts brings ‘Steel Magnolias’ to local stage

The cast of “Steel Magnolias” shares some gossip at Truvy Jones’ salon. An all-female cast invited theatergoers to step back in time to a 1980s hair salon in Natchitoches, Louisiana, for their production of “Steel Magnolias” performed at Rugby’s Village Arts Theater April 30-May 2.
The play takes place in Truvy Jones’ home-based beauty shop, circa 1985. Jones, played by Rugby High drama student Amber Selensky, has a bright red bouffant ‘do and an appetite for gossip, which all cast members except for newcomer Annelle Dupuy-Desoto readily supply. ....

Burgum names six recipients of 2021 Governor's Awards for the Arts | News, Sports, Jobs

BISMARCK – Gov. Doug Burgum has selected the recipients of the 2021 Governor’s Awards for the Arts, from 27 nominations.
The six selected are as follows:
– Arts in Education: JoAnn Miller, Fargo
– Arts Organization: Minot Area Council of the Arts, Minot
– Individual Achievement: Melissa Gordan, Bismarck, and David Trottier, Rugby
– Individual Cultural Heritage: Rex Cook, Dickinson
– Private Business: Enderlin Municipal Fine Arts Association with Maryhill Manor, Enderlin.
The Governor’s Awards for the Arts were established in 1977 as a way of recognizing individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the arts throughout the state. Recipients are chosen for their efforts to expand arts opportunities to new audiences, create an appreciation for North Dakota’s cultural heritage, make the arts more central to education and an integral part of community life, as well as the length of service w ....
