Dighton Boston Post Cane: Virginia Silvia is town's oldest resident

DIGHTON On Oct. 14 Virginia Silvia will turn 99.
But now at age 98, she s already the oldest person living in Dighton. So on June 28 her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the town got a head start on wishing her a happy birthday with a special award, the Boston Post Cane.
Silvia, who still lives in her own home, seemed unfazed by the accolades, which included a certificate of recognition from the selectmen and her name s inclusion on the town s Post Cane recipients plaque.
I thank the man up there, she said, pointing her own cane upward when asked the secret of her longevity. ....

A Tribute to Veterans, sponsored by the Mayor’s Worthy Cause, is scheduled for Saturday, June 12.
Morton Hospital, Mozzone Lumber and Quality Beverage are supporters of the Mayor’s Worthy Cause and were among the first to donate in support of the Tribute to Veterans. These donations, along with others from the Greater Taunton Allied Veterans Council and GAR Memorial Trust, as well as a grant from the Taunton Cultural Council, made it possible to host this free community event for Taunton residents.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The opening ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Vietnam War Memorial at Church Green. Additional activities will include the display of military vehicles downtown, an obstacle course event at noon behind City Hall, and patriotic art displays by local artists at Liberty & Union plaza. ....

Dighton Historical Society plant sale
The Dighton Historical Society is holding its plant sale on Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, at the Winslow-Davis Museum, 1217 Williams St., in Dighton. If you have any plants to donate, call Joan at 774-501-3495.
At 11 a.m. there will be a Historical House Marker Ceremony to highlight the Dighton Historical Commission s program to recognize old homes in Dighton. Come see the beautiful plaque and learn how to order one for your old house.
TAAVA hosting chicken BBQ drive-thru
The Taunton Area Vietnam Veterans Association will be hosting a chicken BBQ event on Saturday, May 22, at 5 p.m. The event will be drive-thru only, at the pavilion behind Dighton Town Hall and is a scholarship fundraiser. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by contacting Tony Rosario at 508-669-6877. ....

DIGHTON The Town of Dighton, in partnership with the Historical Commission, is pleased to announce that the town was recently awarded $12,500 from the Massachusetts Historical Commission s Fiscal Year 2021 Survey and Planning Grant Program.

DIGHTON The Town of Dighton, in partnership with the Historical Commission, is pleased to announce that the town was recently awarded $12,500 from the Massachusetts Historical Commission’s Fiscal Year 2021 Survey and Planning Grant Program.
Funding from this program supports historic preservation planning activities in communities throughout the state. Eligible applicants included local historical commissions, local historic district commissions, planning offices and other public and non-profit historic preservation organizations. ....

James Briggs House Dighton: Historic sea captain's home demolished

DIGHTON A 230-year-old Dighton landmark is no more.
The James Briggs House at 949 Somerset Ave. was reduced to a pile of rubble and lumber in a single day by town Highway Department crew and equipment on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, ending plans to save the historic building but clearing the way for plans to turn the land, which abuts Town Hall, into a community garden.
The house, which was built in 1790 by its namesake, a Dighton sea captain, met its demise despite efforts to save it by selling it to someone who would move it elsewhere.
In early December, the winning bidder changed his mind about following the town s intention within the request for proposals that the structure be moved to another location, after carefully figuring costs and logistics, the bidder said. ....
