DURHAM, N.C. (WRAL) - A Black softball player in North Carolina says she felt forced to cut her hair during a game.
The high school sophomore says the umpires enforced a rule that she calls discriminatory.
Nicole Pyles and others now are pushing for change.
The Hillside High School player loves the game of softball.
“The umps came up to my coach asking about my beads, and so I was just like, well, it’s fine,” she said. “I’ll tuck, I’ll put them away.” ....

When Barrett Brown had issues with some students sleeping in class, he was faced with two choices: send them to the principal’s office or investigate the core reason. He decided on the latter. And when he did, he discovered that some kids weren’t getting enough sleep because they were tasked with taking care of younger siblings while their parents worked late shifts.   
Do you suspend them or send them to the office every time they are not up in class?” asked Brown, a former teacher who is now Alamance County’s NAACP president. “Being aware of what s going on in students lives sometimes can make a difference with how you deal with disciplinary challenges.”  ....
