Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage celebrated at Western

Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in Michigan and the United States. Asian American heritage is celebrated during the month of May in honor of the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which was built by many Chinese immigrants, on May 10, 1869.
There are a lot of people of AAPI heritage everywhere, especially in WMU’s diverse student community. We don’t just look different on the outside, but our values and ideals are also different because of our unique cultural backgrounds, says
Joseph Wen-Hsin Yang, a statistics doctoral student who is president of Western s Taiwanese Student Association. By raising awareness and allowing everyone to learn about our different backgrounds, we can make a step towards being more understanding and peaceful with each other especially after repeated incidents of hate and violence towards people of AAPI heritage this year. ....

Unifying senior receives Leadership in Action Award

I
started my journey as a nervous high school kid on the other side of the world,” said Johnnie “Junior” Cheng, recalling the first time he e-mailed a Purdue student ambassador. “I remember being scared, thinking this older college student must be the real deal.”

Cheng was considering animal sciences programs in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. All were far from his home in Taipei, Taiwan.

“When I received his reply the next morning, I was amazed by the depth of his answers. There was so much energy in the way he wrote about the College of Agriculture. I was invigorated just by reading them because I could feel the passion bleeding from my iPhone screen. I needed to have what he was having.” ....

Student leaders representing race- or ethnicity-based student organizations have shouldered some of the burdens of ensuring students feel like a part of campus in spite of nearly three semesters away from D.C.
Multicultural student organizations have spent the year hosting social events and celebrations to build community among students of color during GW’s virtual semesters.
Students of color said they’ve struggled to feel like a part of the student body, leaning predominantly on student groups and the Multicultural Student Services Center to find their close friends and communities. But with the COVID-19 pandemic preventing in-person events, student leaders of multicultural organizations said they’ve upped their programming to include additional community-focused activities to curb feelings of isolation. ....

Campus responds to increased anti-Asian hate amid pandemic

Anti-Asian hate crimes have risen significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, with reporting database Stop AAPI Hate receiving almost 3,000 accounts of hate crimes since spring 2020.
Although roughly one in four Bay Area residents is Asian, according to Bay Area Census data, this region is not an exception to the national trend. There have been multiple documented instances of violent anti-Asian sentiment and attacks in the past few months, with some directed at those of Asian descent over the age of 60.
In response to the issue, UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ sent out a campuswide email Tuesday in support of the Asian community, expressing sympathy and solidarity with those who are affected by this violence. In the email, Christ provided resources for those in need, which included websites for reporting incidents, campus counseling and campus affinity groups. ....

Weike Wang on Art, Science, and Career Changes
“Science as its best, can be art. The best experiments are really beautiful and simple. One of the things I learned from synthetic organic chemistry, like with mathematical proofs, was how beautiful something could be on one page. And that’s kind of what I want to achieve with writing.”
Before Weike Wang ’11 became a writer — her debut novel, Chemistry
, won the 2018 PEN/Hemingway award — she was an undergraduate at Harvard, where she lived in Currier house, studied chemistry, prepared to apply to medical school, and spent a lot of time in Mallinckrodt Labs. Now, after a public health doctorate at Harvard and a simultaneous MFA at Boston University, she is working on her next novel and teaching creative writing at the University of Pennsylvania and Barnard College. ....
