Space bill passes its third reading

Taiwan’s first space development bill on Monday passed a third reading, empowering the Ministry of Science and Technology to establish a national rocket launch site.
The bill would confirm the ministry as the authority to oversee local space activities, including the establishment of a launch venue and approval of launch plans.
Those who launch a vehicle without obtaining government approval would face a fine of NT$1 million to NT$10 million (US$36,183 to US$361,834), or a prison term of up to five years, the bill says.
Compensation that an owner or operator of a launch vehicle would be required to pay is capped at NT$5 billion if a launch were to cause an accident. ....

Alaska Aerospace loses revenue during pandemic but sees future growth


Like many businesses, the Alaska Aerospace Corp., which runs the Kodiak Pacific Spaceport Complex, did not weather the COVID-19 pandemic unscathed. 
Mark Lester, the CEO of the corporation, said the company has lost 45% of its revenue during the pandemic. 
In a presentation to the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly last week, he said he expects the decrease to continue into 2022 following the delay of several government contracts. 
The company had to lay off and furlough some of its employees due to the decreased revenue. 
Lester, who said he also took a pay cut, noted that 70% of the layoffs and furloughs were from the corporate side of the company.  ....

Launch site issues force rocket firm overseas: sources

The lack of an approved launch site in the nation has forced Taiwan Innovative Space Inc to turn to Australia to launch a research rocket, sources familiar with the matter have said.
Some Taiwan Innovative Space employees departed for Australia in February to complete quarantine and preparatory procedures prior to trial launches this month, a person said on condition of anonymity.
Australian space company Southern Launch would help Taiwan Innovative Space launch its sounding rocket at a site near Adelaide, South Australia, another person with knowledge of the matter said. ....

A draft space development act yesterday cleared a preliminary review at the legislature, which Minister of Science and Technology Wu Tsung-tsong (吳政忠) hailed as a “milestone” for the development of Taiwan’s space industry.
Wu thanked the lawmakers on the legislature’s Education and Culture Committee for reviewing 17 bills proposed by lawmakers, including the one by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Space technology has been mostly used in national defense and communications, but with its increasing commercialization, domestic businesses can join more niches in global supply chains, Wu told reporters on the sidelines of the committee meeting. ....
