Gilas Pilipinas program director Tab Baldwin said there’s no reason for him to treat the Olympic Qualifying Tournament as means for the all-amateur squad to gain experience.
The all-amateur squad faces a tall order in the Tokyo Olympics qualifier as it needs to hurdle host Serbia and Dominican Republic in Group A of the Belgrade phase slated in late-June.
While acknowledging that fans would be satisfied with a good showing in Serbia, Baldwin said in an episode of Hoops Life that there’s no reason why Gilas can’t give it a shot against the fancied foes. ....

SBP wants Kai Sotto in all-amateur Gilas pool

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas plans to have Kai Sotto suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in the third window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers and the Olympic Qualifying Tournament slated in the middle of the year.
SBP president Al Panlilio said after the PBA planning session held Tuesday, March 10 that Sotto is part of the pool for both tournaments which will see Gilas field an all-amateur lineup due to a conflict in the pro league’s schedule.
“He is part of the list so we have to talk to him and reach out to him again,” said Panlilio. “We haven’t finalize the calendar yet and once we do we will share to him what the plan is, and depending on what he’s doing, align that with ours. ....

PBA News: Gilas won't tap PBA stars for Olympic qualifying, Fiba window

THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will be sending an all-cadets team in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Serbia.
SBP president Al Panlilio confirmed that no PBA players will be sent in the tournament.
Players who were picked in the special draft in 2019 and this March will comprise the core of the Gilas Pilipinas team that will fly to Belgrade in hopes of qualifying for Tokyo Olympics.
Panlilio said the PBA schedule running smack into the OQT which is set from June 29 to July 4 played a role in the decision to field an all-cadets squad.
PBA players will also not be sent in the coming Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers fourth window which will be staged sometime this year and to be hosted by the Philippines. ....

Sending the best team possible is something the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas will have to discuss with the PBA in the near future after Gilas Pilipinas was selected to replace New Zealand in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia.
Gilas and its fans got a huge surprise Friday after FIBA announced the country’s inclusion in the Tokyo Olympics qualifier following New Zealand’s decision to pull out of the June 29-July 4 tournament due to a “spike in the number of high performance events and the costs of sending teams abroad.”
The Philippines, which initially missed out of the OQT following its last-place finish in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, got the slot by virtue of having the best world ranking among the countries from the Asia-Oceania region. ....
