Hill's Pet Nutrition to Build New $250M Facility

Colgate-Palmolive Co. division Hill’s Pet Nutrition is preparing to spend $250 million to build a new manufacturing facility in Kansas to help the company meet increasing demand for its products, the firm announced in a recent release.
The new plant will be located at the Tonganoxie Business Park in Tonganoxie, KS and feature the latest manufacturing technology.
“Hill’s Pet Nutrition is excited to be growing our roots in Kansas. We’ve been part of the community for almost 80 years and this new facility will help us meet our mission of enriching and lengthening the special relationships between people and their pets by providing high quality nutrition,” the division’s president, Jasper Nordengaard, said in a statement. ....

Tonganoxie mask order to expire

It appears Tonganoxie’s mask ordinance will be allowed to expire later this month.
Members of the Tonganoxie City Council voted Monday not to extend the ordinance which requires people to wear face coverings in public spaces in the city, according to Assistant City Manager Dan Porter.
The existing mask ordinance is set to expire April 14.
A similar order that was in place in the city of Leavenworth expired March 31. Members of the Lansing City Council voted last week to rescind a mask ordinance in that city.
Leavenworth County does not have a countywide mask order.

As Leavenworth city commissioners prepare to consider an extension of a mask order, signatures are being checked on a petition from a group seeking to repeal the order.
When they meet this evening, commissioners are scheduled to consider an extension of an ordinance that requires people to wear masks or other face coverings in public spaces in the city of Leavenworth.
Commissioners approved the ordinance in November in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. The ordinance, which was approved by a 4-1 vote, will expire at the end of Sunday if it is not extended. ....

McCutchen sworn in Monday to Tonganoxie City Council position; meetings potentially returning to in-person variety later next month at new venue

Jennifer McCutchen was sworn in during a virtual Zoom meeting Monday.
Council members normally are sworn in during a traditional in-person meeting, but the council has been meeting virtually throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Challenges with the size of the current council chambers at 321 Delaware Street and other factors have kept the meetings in virtual mode, though that soon could change.
Remodeling of the former public library at Third and Bury streets is finishing up. The larger space means the council could be moving to in-person meetings that will be streamed to a city YouTube channel starting later this month. The first in-person meeting could take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 19. The meeting falls on a Tuesday because Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the day before. The Council normally meets on the first and third Mondays of each month. ....

There is a vacancy on the Tonganoxie Public Library board.
A Tonganoxie city resident or resident within the Tonganoxie USD 464 school district boundaries is eligible to apply. A term on the board is expiring and the incumbent has announced that he will not pursue reappointment to another four-year term.
Anyone who satisfies the residency requirements may submit an application to fill the opening.
