12 Fantastic Things To Do In Salina

TravelAwaits
Jun.9.2021
At the intersection of Interstates 70 and 135, Salina is the crossroads of Kansas. Any Kansas road trip should include the beautiful city of Salina, just over an hour north of Wichita. As the crossroads of the state, Salina offers numerous cultural and recreational activities along with excellent shopping and dining.
You’ll want to stay at least one night in Salina; reserve a room at one of the city’s numerous lodgings or camp at Salina KOA Holiday.
Here are 12 great things to do when you’re in town.
1. Explore SculptureTour Salina
Many of the city’s amenities are clustered in Salina Downtown. For an excellent orientation, explore SculptureTour Salina. Each year, sculptors install between 15 and 25 sculptures in Downtown Salina. Silver boxes on the sculpture pedestals hold ballots. You can also pick up ballots at downtown businesses. At the end of the exhibition season, the city of Salina buys the winning sculpture. Anyone interested may also purchase sculptures. We always look forward to seeing the new sculptures.

Salina Central celebrates graduates in weekend ceremony

Salina Central celebrates graduates in weekend ceremony
Salina High School Central had its commencement at 5 p.m. Sunday at Tony's Pizza Event's Center.
Salina Central's graduation featured addresses from two alumni, former Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss and astronaut Steven Hawley.
Hawley, who spent over 30 days total in space, recalled his own graduation ceremony, and the keynote given by Senator Bob Dole.
Thanks to archives, Hawley was able to find the transcript of Dole's 1969 speech. Fifty-two years later, Hawley said one part stood out as he spoke to a new class of Central graduates.
"In a few more years, on a day like today, one of you may stand before this podium addressing another graduating class," Dole said in 1969. "Whichever one of you that speaker is will have gained, hopefully, something more than wrinkles and a few gray hairs over the years, and will have something more to pass along to the graduating class."

Kansas Wesleyan University celebrates commencement after pandemic year

After a trying year for many during the pandemic, members of the Kansas Wesleyan University family celebrated graduates at a commencement ceremony Saturday.
Everyone in attendance at Tony's Pizza Events Center had a feeling of relief that this time had finally come.
"We're here, we've made it, we're in person, just like we have been all year," said KWU President Matt Thompson.
Thompson quoted Vice President Kamala Harris about being the solution daily and a warrior in future battles.
"Graduates, there will be battles ahead, personal, professional and civic," Thompson said. "During your time here though, you have been prepared for what's to come."

St. John's Military School history preserved in Salina, Kansas, museum

The Salina Journal
Mike Wagner usually wears a plaid shirt, blue jeans and work boots, but this weekend is different.
Accompanying his long black and gray beard —  trimmed and groomed — the diesel mechanic and businessman from Hays has acquired more of an Ivy League wardrobe for the grand opening of St. John’s Military School Historical Museum.
For much of the three days packed with events — many of them aiming to raise money for the museum — the 1991 SJMS graduate will don suits and neckties to greet his beloved cadet-mates, former faculty and staff, and supporters, when they visit the old campus in north Salina.

Durham Salina hosts May the Fourth supply drive and touch-a-truck event

The force was strong on Tuesday as Durham School Services celebrated May 4 - known as Star Wars Day - with an event to gather supplies for summer school.
During the May the Fourth be With You event at Tony's Pizza Events Center, the service asked the community to stuff the bus with school supplies.
Kevin Kuder, the general manager of Durham in Salina, said he wanted the company to serve the community beyond just driving buses for the school district.
"We were going to do a community event with a need we saw, a stuff-the-bus for school supplies," Kuder said. "I wanted to have more hype to it so I reached out to the sheriff's office."
