Supervisors approve $30,000 Reading the Range agreement

The Gila County Board of Supervisors approved an Intergovernmental Agreement with Tonto Natural Resource Conservation District (NRCD) at its April 20 meeting. The IGA with the NRCD makes it possible for the county to award a $30,000 economic development grant to the ongoing Reading the Range program.
In 2000, a collaborative range-monitoring program, Reading the Range, was established with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Gila County, Gila County Cattle Growers Association, and the Tonto National Forest with the help of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Renewable Resources Extension Act grant program.
Reading the Range was originally funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but has grown and is now funded from a variety of contributors with 45% being federal funding sources, 5% being state and local government funding sources, and 49% from private funding sources. Collaborators include ranchers, U.S. Forest Service, University of Arizon ....

Supervisors approve funding for Reading the Range program

The county recently approved funding of a program that has proven beneficial in providing information on ways to improve grazing.
The Reading the Range program has helped increase the chance for success for Gila County ranchers, while improving the environment impacted by public grazing.
Ashley Hall with the Gila County Cooperative Extension Service and Lori Brown, chair of the Tonto Natural Resource Conservation District, asked the Gila County Board of Supervisors for $30,000 to support the Reading the Range program at its March 2 meeting.
One of Hallâs major programming efforts is in administering the federally funded Reading the Range monitoring program, which is in place on more than 1 million acres on the Tonto National Forest. ....

Supervisor Tommie Martin dies

Tommie Cline Martin, 69, a lifelong resident of Gila County, with roots going back several generations, died Thursday, Dec. 10 in the Valley after recovering from a life-threatening viral infection earlier this year. She would have celebrated her 70th birthday Jan. 11, 2021.
Martin had served as Gila County District 1 supervisor since 2005 after being elected in 2004. She was just reelected to a fifth term in office this year. She was also on the county planning and zoning commission from 1991 to 1998.
Following a serious viral infection in May and emergency hospitalization in June, the popular Rim Country supervisor was back to work attending meetings throughout the summer and fall, up to the most recent Board of Supervisors meeting this past week. ....
