HAMMOND- The United States Attorneyâs Office announced that Gary T. Bell is now the Acting United States Attorney. The Vacancies Reform Act (VRA), 5 U.S.C. § 3345(a)(1), provides that when a presidentially appointed U. S. Attorney resigns, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney (âFAUSAâ) of that office automatically becomes Acting U.S. Attorney. As a result of Thomas L. Kirschâs resignation, Gary T. Bell is now the Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana. Mr. Bell has held the FAUSA position since earlier this year and has been in a Supervisory Attorney position since 2014. Mr. Bell joined the U.S. Attorneyâs office in June of 1999 as an Assistant United States Attorney. At that time, Mr. Bell focused on violent and drug related crimes and worked mostly with the GRIT task force. ....

Volunteers, businesses and community members delivered Christmas gifts to 386 children in 137 Jefferson County families. Watching the relief on a mother s face as she met me outside to put the gifts in her garage for Christmas brought me to tears, said Kim Schmith, Kiwanis board member and Operation Rudolph coordinator. The Madras Kiwanis Club oversees the community program that serves the lowest-income youth and families of Jefferson County communities during the Christmas season by providing gifts. Operation Rudolph gathered family names a week longer than usual to be able to help more local families. ....

President Donald Trump appointed Thomas L. Kirsch II as United States attorney for Indiana s Northern District in 2017. Trump also named Kirsch as Barrett s replacement before she was confirmed to the high court in October. Kirsch will become a circuit Judge for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. The Senate confirmed Kirsch s appointed with a 51-44 vote Tuesday. ....
