Former Charlotte Observer reporter Patricia Cornwell introduced her sleuth, medical examiner Kay Scarpetta, in “Postmortem” in 1990. Since then, the 24 Scarpetta novels have easily sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. Cornwell, who used to be incognito summer on Wrightsville Beach, has even put down a few books in this area.
In her spare time, Cornwell also scoured a few cookbooks, two non-fiction books claiming that the English painter Walter Sickert was Jack the Ripper, and three other mysteries starring fictional Charlotte reporter Andy Brazil. (One, “Hornet’s Nest,” was shot in Wilmington as a TNT TV movie that aired in 2012; the old StarNews newsroom co-starred as the Charlotte Observer.) ....

Dorothy Gillespie works showcased at Wilma W. Daniels Gallery


Exhibition of works by internationally known artist Dorothy Gillespie will be on display at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College and the Wilma W. Daniels Art Gallery.
The exhibit explores the artist s multi-faceted work and features works from across six decades of her career.
Opening receptions for the exhibition, Dorothy Gillespie: Selected Works from the Radford University Collection will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15 and Monday, Jan. 18. The receptions will be indoor/outdoor events, adhering to state and local requirements. Masks will be required.
The exhibition and continues through Friday, Feb. 26. The exhibition will be open noon-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays (closed Monday, Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King Jr. holiday). ....

Community: ARTGAWK exhibition to showcase world-renowned artists at RU Art Museum


The Radford University Art Museum is proud to present “ARTGAWK: Choice Pickings from the Radford University Permanent Collection.” The exhibition will be on display beginning Wednesday, Jan. 27, through April 17 at the Art Museum at the Covington Center on the campus.
The exhibit opening will be stretched across three nights to maintain safe social distancing guidelines. Groups of 10 attendees will be allowed into the exhibit for 30-minute sessions to view the artwork on display. The opening dates will take place on Jan. 27, 28 and 29 from 4:30 until 8 p.m. each evening.
The exhibition will highlight significant and interesting works from the university’s extensive art collection, including recent acquisitions that have never before been on public display. The art museum’s permanent collection was founded by acclaimed artist Dorothy Gillespie, whose work will be among other famous artists on display in the exhibit. ....
