Parade recognizes Child Abuse Awareness Month in Trenton

TRENTON, Tenn. In recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month, a local organization did something special to raise awareness to the cause.
The Gibson County Carl Perkins Center teamed up with Coordinated School Health and the Trenton Special School District to host a parade with local first responders.
“We came out to the elementary school and did a safety parade with Trenton Police Department and the fire department and some other EMTs,” said Bett Jewell, director of the Gibson County Carl Perkins Center.
The safety parade wrapped around Trenton Elementary School, and all grades were there to watch. ....

Tennessee gets $6.9 million in STEM education grants

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Tennessee officials say they have landed $6.9 million in grants to aid in computer science and STEM education.
The state Department of Education says the money includes a $4 million Education Innovation and Research early phase grant and a $2.9 million Out-of-School Time Career Pathway Program grant. 
The $4 million grant will help expand STEM and computer science education in 20 Tennessee high schools, including with work-based learning opportunities to earn postsecondary credits. 
A competitive grant process to pick the schools will launch this summer. 
The $2.9 million grant will expand computer science and STEM education in five rural school districts. ....

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Tennessee was awarded the Education Innovation and Research (EIR) early phase grant for $4,000,000 and was one of only four states to be awarded the Out-of-School Time Career Pathway Program grant for $2,900,000.
The nearly $7 million in grants will be used to strengthen computer science pathways, STEM education and help more students be prepared for success after high school.
“Thanks to longstanding partnerships with local and national partners, Tennessee is receiving nearly $7 million dollars to strengthen high school achievement, boost postsecondary enrollment and directly benefit Tennessee high school students,” said Commissioner Penny Schwinn in a press release ....

Though difficult, 2020 brought some good news

Life came to a sudden halt on March 11 when news of the novel coronavirus, which originated in China, hit home. Many small businesses and schools were shuttered. Essential personnel were asked to risk their health and safety for the good of their communities, and the numbers of those contracting COVID-19 rose as Americans tried to come to terms with physically distancing from loved ones and wearing face masks in nearly all public spaces. More than 300,000 Americans have died, and there is no bright side to be found in their deaths.
While 2020 could go down as the most difficult year in modern history (it’ll take historians decades or longer to make that call), good news can still be found in our admittedly subjective list of 12 year-in-review top or favorite non-sports stories of the year. ....
