Pegasus: Why won't India's government say clearly that it has not used spyware on citizens?


By now, ministers and Bharatiya Janata Party members have fulminated and muttered complaints about the massive story of illegal surveillance using Pegasus spyware on Indian citizens.
On Monday, new Information Technology minister Ashiwini Vaishnav described the reports as “highly sensational”, hours before it emerged his own phone number had been on a list of potential hacking targets. Union Home Minister Amit Shah attempted to repurpose his infamous chronology comment and make vague remarks about a global conspiracy.
Ravi Shankar Prasad, recently sacked from the Cabinet, asked if this was “revenge for the way India handled Covid, caccination and more than 75% of population are getting free vaccines” even though the consortium of news organisations that broke the story were reporting on surveillance in Mexico, Rwanda, Morocco and Hungary. ....

Delhi Police files 113 FIRs of fraud, black marketing of Covid-19 medicines


A total of 100 arrests have been made in these cases, the police informed on Tuesday.
The Delhi Police has also begun action against fraud callers and cyber financial cheats.
In the last two days, 200 mobile numbers, 95 bank accounts, 33 UTR and 17 UPI/Wallet involved in this inhuman crime have been identified, the police said.
The Delhi Police cyber unit CyPAD has also aligned with the Cyber and Information Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, to create an integrated platform for law enforcement agencies and financial intermediaries like banks, wallets, merchants for real-time incident reporting, transmission, escalation, estoppels and resolution. ....

100 persons arrested for COVID-19-related crimes


113 FIRs lodged in connection with same
The police on Tuesday said they have arrested 100 persons and registered 113 FIRs in connection with COVID-related malpractices.
Delhi Police Public Relations Officer Chinmoy Biswal said out of 113 FIRs, 61 cases pertain to cheating and fraud in the name of providing COVID medicines or oxygen etc. while 52 cases pertain to black marketing, hoarding or overcharging.
The police said, in the last two days, they have identified 200 mobile numbers, 95 bank accounts, 33 UTR and 17 UPI/Wallet involved in this crime.
They said in coordination with the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) and I4C of MHA, they have managed to stop a few transactions as well. ....
