Oconee County deputies continue to search for killer of Racetrac clerk

The slaying of RaceTrac clerk Elijah Wood remains a compelling mystery two months after he was gunned down at the gas station on the outskirts of Watkinsville.
Wood, described by a family member as a hard-working, deeply religious young man who grew up in a rural area of Oglethorpe County, was killed in a crime that has stymied Oconee County law enforcement.
The 23-year-old’s life ended March 19 while working the night shift at the RaceTrac on U.S. Highway 441.
Surveillance video showing a person dressed from head to toe in black and carrying a pistol has been viewed by an untold number of people and various law enforcement agencies. But no one has been able to discern the identity of the killer with a slender build and a bouncy step. ....

OPINION: We must do more to prevent sexual assault and violence against women

“Text me when you get home safe.”
“Keep your keys in your hands. Take a well-lit route home. Wear shoes you can run in. Talk loudly when on the phone.”
These phrases have run through nearly every woman’s head when traveling alone in public, particularly at night. Approximately six in ten women say they take precautions to avoid sexual assault. The same amount of men say they do not take any sort of precaution.
Women frequently feel unsafe when out walking alone, and this must change. In 2021, it is unacceptable that violence against women remains a global crisis.
On the evening of March 3, Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, was kidnapped and murdered while walking home from a friend’s house in central London. In response to Everard’s tragic death, women around the world have recently shared their fears and experiences with harassment, sparking a global social media movement with the hashtags, “#ReclaimTheseStre ....

Dollar General store coming to Bishop after historic annexation

Dollar General store coming to Bishop after historic annexation
“We need something like the Dollar General,” Bishop Mayor Johnny Pritchett said.
The council voted to annex almost 30 acres into the town, which since its inception had been a 0.8-square-mile municipality.
The annexation, according to the mayor, will add to the tax base and create more financial opportunities for the town, especially when the remainder of the site is developed in the future.
The petition for the annexation and a zoning change was made by Ezekiel Lambert III of Madison for the registered owner, Reids Ferry LLC of Morgan County.
The proposed Dollar General will be located on about two acres and face Georgia Highway 186 (High Shoals Road) near its intersection with U.S. Highway 441. The site is near where a new Golden Pantry will be built after the previous store burned last April. ....
