In an effort to increase revenues without assessing taxes to all property owners, the Town Board has been reviewing various costs and adding license and permit fees to cover services.
The latest increase in fees being contemplated is a possible $250 fee to contractors who bring materials to the Recycling Center. The fee has been $100 per year. In addition, landscapers would also have to pay for a license to do business in the town. A $250 fee per year would be assessed to them as well under a proposal to be discussed at future meeting.. ....

Decision on marijuana: Board votes to opt out: Shoreline access recommendations adopted

Shelter Island Town Hall (Credit: Tara Smith)
In a former post, it was stated the Town Board at its May 7 meeting voted to opt out of permitting retail sales of marijuana. That was incorrect. The Board voted to hold a public hearing on the issue on May 28.
If the Town ops out, it could be reversed either by a Town Board vote or as a result of a referendum if enough residents petition for a public vote. A petition could put the issue to a vote in November.
The town is also holding a public hearing on banning smoking of cigarettes, marijuana or any other substance at either Crescent or Wades beaches. That concern came from members and Police Chief Jim Read, fearing complaints from families with young children if smokers on the beach were in their vicinity. To ban marijuana, they had to ban all substances that might be smoked. ....

New Preserve site alarms some neighbors: Officials defend actions

Shelter Island Town Hall (Credit: Tara Smith)
Not for the first time, a resident questioned the Community Preservation Fund Advisory Board (CPF) about actions taken at the West Neck Preserve at the corner of Nostrand Parkway and West Neck Road in Silver Beach.
Some see it as a senseless clearing of woods to create a parkland or meadows, the opposite of the natural state they’ve come to value.
Doug Sherrod, who lives in Silver Beach, told the CPF members at Monday’s meeting he had been accustomed to hiking in the area, which now appears to have been “clear cut” and reminds him of a park. ....

Town Board plans ahead: Roadways, holidays and recordings on the agenda

Shelter Island Town Hall (Credit: Reporter File Photo)
At the Town Board work session Feb. 23, Heights Property Owners Corporation General Manager Stella Lagudis submitted a request for a ban on heavy delivery trucks from two roadways in the Heights.
A full presentation will happen next week, but Ms. Lagudis told the board that problems surfaced during a generally dry summer on Sunnyside Avenue and Serpentine Drive with heavy trucks barreling along posing safety issues and causing dust to fly. Besides beating up on roads, with the warm weather, residents who wanted to enjoy an outside lunch were finding their plans spoiled by the dustup. ....

New laws affect boat storage, abandoned vehicles - Shelter Island Reporter

New laws affect boat storage, abandoned vehicles
(Reporter file photo)
As work gets underway with building more boat racks, the Town Board Friday unanimously passed a law regulating boat storage on town property.
The motivation for the new law was a combination of circumstances, including safety, overcrowding of boats at some sites and an effort to increase revenues, Supervisor Gerry Siller said.
During a public hearing on the law, he responded to questions from Peter Beardsley, a member of the Menantic Yacht Club, who expressed concerns about access, costs and reasons for the new law that he feared might interfere with the club’s regular races. Mr. Beardsley also said he didn’t  want to see a limit put on how many boats a household might be able to store on the beach. ....
