Police officers, students and trainers learning noise assessment procedures in the Heights last week. (Credit: Courtesy photo) The Shelter Island Police Department conducted a Community Noise Enforcement Training this past week, one at Crescent Beach and one in the Heights, where students took decibel readings. Three new police officers and the Town Attorney received a two-day initial training block, and other department police officers, and full-time bay constables joined the group on the second day to be re-certified. Eric Zwerling instructed the group and has been working with the town since 1997 when the current section of the Town Code (Chapter 92 Noise) was drafted and adopted. ....
Trish Anzalone (Credit: Charity Robey) When Patricia (Trish) Anzalone moved to Shelter Island in 2014, she brought with her the strength to stand up and do what must be done. Not just the strength to waitress at The Islander, though surely standing up and doing matters there as well. Not long after Trish moved to Shelter Island, she noticed a plane preparing to take off from Klenawicus Airfield, the grassy runway behind her house that sees pretty light usage. It was the first take-off of the season, so she got out her phone to take a picture. Her fiancé Rich Surozenski saw it too, and Trish remembers him saying, “It’s not going to clear the trees,” right before the plane nose-dived. She’s not sure when or how she called 911 because she took off through brush and high grass on a beeline to the crash, joined by her neighbor, Amanda Gutiw. ....
