Quandary Peak parking permit system to be implemented by July 30


Quandary Peak is pictured May 21. The 14,265-foot peak is the most popular 14er in Colorado, attracting hikers, climbers and skiers year-round, which has led to the trailhead parking lot overflowing on busy days and creating traffic issues for nearby residents.

Summit County officials, along with leaders from the town of Breckenridge, are pushing forward with some strategies to help mitigate the overcrowded parking at the Quandary Peak trailhead, but more work is to be done to ensure surrounding trailheads, including McCullough Gulch, won’t be negatively impacted.
During a Summit Board of County Commissioners work session Tuesday, July 13, Assistant County Manager Bentley Henderson updated the board on how these various strategies are coming together. Blue River Horse Center withdraws proposal to use Summit County fairgrounds

In a move that surprised the county’s elected officials, the Blue River Horse Center on Tuesday withdrew its proposal to use the county fairgrounds as a home for its nonprofit horse rehabilitation and educational programming.
Blue River Horse Center Executive Director and Founder John Longhill shared that change of heart with county commissioners and officials at Tuesday’s county work session. Longhill said the analysis of the proposal conducted by several county departments analysis that did not support the organization’s wishes to use a 5- to 6-acre parcel for programming influenced him to withdraw the request. ....

Snake River Watershed Task Force creates model for mine cleanup projects

After a major project to clean up the Snake River watershed due to acid mine drainage from the Pennsylvania Mine, project members say the effort can serve as a model for other communities to restore an area damaged by mining.
detailing progress on the Pennsylvania Mine project, including improvements in some of the heavy metal concentrations below the mine.
According to the report, the Pennsylvania Mine was considered one of the state’s most problematic and polluting inactive mines.
While the major pieces of the project are complete, Summit County Open Space & Trails Director Brian Lorch said monitoring and work on the project which began in the late 1990s will be ongoing and that hundreds of mining claims in the area will continue to be addressed. ....
