SUNY Canton criminal justice professor earns Chancellor's Award

CANTON - The director of the new SUNY Canton Center for Criminal Justice, Intelligence, and Cybersecurity (CJIC) has been recognized with one of the State University of New York s top awards. 
Elizabeth A. Brown, Ph.D., recently received the SUNY Chancellor s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. Brown is a tenured School of Science, Health, and Criminal Justice professor and teaches in the college s popular Criminal Investigation program.
According to SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran, the CJIC concept was developed entirely by Brown. It is located in the newly renovated Dana Hall building and includes the St. Lawrence County-David Sullivan Law Enforcement Academy and the college s Corrections Academy. ....

SUNY Canton selects new dean of Science, Health and Criminal Justice

CANTON - SUNY Canton has named Michelle L. Currier, Ph.D., as the new dean of the School of Science, Health and Criminal Justice.
Currier serves as an assistant professor in the school where she teaches courses in the Criminal Justice Department and led the development of the new Bachelor of Science in Forensic Criminology degree. Prior to her faculty position, she was the director of the college s Southworth Library Learning Commons.
Dr. Currier has demonstrated the ability to effectively manage multiple leadership roles and additional responsibilities throughout her career that will serve her well as the next dean, said SUNY Canton Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Peggy A. De Cooke. She has evidenced a leadership style that includes listening, collaboration, encouragement and data-driven decision making. ....

SPRINGFIELD A bill filed on behalf of Molly Bish’s family would expand the use of DNA in criminal investigations, allowing investigators to look for partial matches and narrow down the field of potential suspects in cold cases.
But the proposal is met with serious questions about privacy and police and prosecutorial overreach even from prosecutors themselves.
The bill, S.1595 an Act Permitting Familial Searching and Partial DNA Matches in Investigating Certain Unsolved Cases was filed by State Sen. Anne Gobi, D-Spencer, and Rep. Todd Smola, R-Warren. In March, it was forwarded to the Public Safety and Homeland Safety Committee for review. ....
