From an Outdoor Classroom to a STEM Club: How Arizona is Supporting Innovative School Programs During the Pandemic

Students at Gowan Science Academy in Yuma, Arizona, could soon have an outdoor classroom where they can socially distance, work on messy projects and enjoy the sunshine.
The outdoor learning hub will be an asset for the public school’s buddy program, where sixth graders work with kindergarteners on projects a practice that could expand now that the school has the extra space.
In previous years, students have worked together to create alphabet books while “randomly sitting in the grass,” said principal Jamie Haines. With the outdoor classroom, they’ll have whiteboards, tables, Wi-Fi and electricity to work outside while taking advantage of living in the “Sunniest City on Earth.” ....

There are potential solutions to address Wisconsin's expected health care worker shortage. None are foolproof

There are a number of proposed courses of action for the “Silver Tsunami,” the expected surge from an aging U.S. population that will likely strain the U.S. health care system in a way similar to the COVID-19 pandemic but over a longer period of time.
The “Wisconsin 2020 Health Care Workforce Report” from the Wisconsin Hospitals Association says that solutions include creating a healthier population by curbing obesity to lower the need for hospital visits. There are also racial disparities that have left communities of color, especially in Wisconsin, with longstanding barriers to quality health care as well as more challenges for young people to enter the medical fields. ....

Pensacola State College’s newest addition is now ready for students, after Friday’s ribbon-cutting at its Ninth Avenue campus.
The $15 million Baars Technology Building is a state-of-the-art, two-story facility containing almost 24,000 sq. ft.
“We’ll accommodate our growing cybersecurity program, our math lab which will be on the left side [of the building],” said PSC President Ed Meadows. “And other faculty and classrooms for mathematics and computer science.”
Meadows said the price tag was not 15 million originally, but the project ran so long that the cost increased over time. The project, he adds, did get help from the Escambia and Santa Rosa County Commissions, along with then-Pensacola mayor Ashton Hayward. ....
