New Milford Police Urge People to Stay Away From Housatonic River

In the aftermath of recent drownings in the area, New Milford Police have taken to social media to warn residents of the dangers of the Housatonic River.
Back in June, two men from Danbury lost their lives while fishing by the Bleachery Dam, one man slipped into the raging river and the other slipped in trying to rescue him, both were declared accidental drowning victims.

With summer storms, that seem to be very prevalent this year in Northwest Connecticut, causing the Housatonic River to be extra active and dangerous. The New Milford Police Department have taken to social media to warn residents of the danger that the roaring river possess. ....

It may look peaceful and calm, but don t be fooled, the waters beneath the Housatonic River can become very dangerous and can cause problems for even the strongest swimmers.
Case in point, the bodies of two fishermen were recovered from the river earlier this month and that has prompted New Milford officials to issue a warning to all residents not to swim or fish in the Housatonic River, especially in the area near the Bleachery Dam.

According to newstimes.com, fire officials from Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 are warning residents that this is not a recreational area, and not a good fishing spot. The Dam should never be approached from upstream, downstream, or even the shoreline. ....

Veteran New Milford volunteer firefighter dies at 69

NEW MILFORD For Robert S. Golembeski, the volunteer firehouse in New Milford was like a second home.
Since the 1970s, his rare smile and steady presence were a staple there, his chief said.
The longtime, second-generation volunteer firefighter with the historic Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 of New Milford, died at 69 on Feb. 24 after an illness.
Golembeski was a lifelong New Milford resident, spending nearly a half-century serving his community. From New Milford High School to the Water Witch firehouse, he was a familiar presence around the town.
“Bobby was always around the firehouse, whether it was a training night, a work night, cleaning, doing training,” Fire Chief Richard Squires said. “If you needed somebody to take one of the fire trucks to a function or for standby, you would ask him, and he would do it with a smile on his face and very proud to do it.” ....

NEW MILFORD – Robert S. Golembeski, 69, of New Milford, passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2021. He was the loving husband of Muriel (Johnson) Golembeski.
Robert was born in New Milford on June 14, 1951, the son of the late Stanley and Anna (Docktor) Golembeski. A lifelong resident of New Milford, Robert graduated from New Milford High School in 1969. He was married on June 12, 1982, and worked for Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Yankee Gas. In recent years, Robert also worked closely with his son, David, as a groundskeeper at Pomperaug Golf Club.
Robert was a 48-year volunteer firefighter with the Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 of New Milford. He served in numerous positions and established many lasting friendships through his years of service at the firehouse. He also spent many years as a volunteer EMT with the New Milford Ambulance, and served as chief in 1990. ....
