This weekend, hundreds of pipeline opponents are expected to congregate in northwestern Minnesota for a three-day event they’re calling the Treaty People Gathering, with a projected large-scale event on Monday, June 7.

Shanai Matteson, an artist and community organizer who grew up in Palisade, stands at the site where the Line 3 oil pipeline will cross underneath the Mississippi River. Matteson moved back to the area about a year ago and is staying at the welcome center. She recently rode her bike along the entire Line 3 pipeline route from Superior, Wis., to the North Dakota border, stopping at nearly all of the water crossing locations. Central Minnesota students join Line 3 pipeline opposition

PALISADE College of St. Benedict senior Melissa Burrell joined a snowy gathering of pipeline opponents and described it as whimsical.  
Equipment being used to construct the Enbridge Energy Line 3 oil pipeline replacement in northern Minnesota sat silent that day, Feb. 21.
Burrell visited the camp founded by indigenous women along the Line 3 route and the Mississippi River with a group of 75 students and faculty from across the state. Residents of the camp, called the Water Protectors Welcome Center, demonstrate against the pipeline, rally support among opponents and pray over the water. 
Burrell, an environmental studies and peace studies major, visited the camp five times at the end of 2020 and a few times this year.  ....
