“Come help us package and distribute four thousand pounds of sweet potatoes.” The appeal came last week via email from my church. Yes, it was for real. (More on the potatoes below.) Then, Sunday morning in Sunday school class I was given the “opportunity” to teach fifth graders on a Sunday this summer – just one Sunday. Always plenty of opportunities for volunteers.
Next, I came into the office Monday morning to discover that this is National Volunteer Week 2021. I trust you’ve been a volunteer.
I’m certain you’ve had countless opportunities to volunteer – coach kids’ athletics, serve on neighborhood watch, lead American Heritage Girls or Trail Life (for boys) groups, tackle community projects, teach Sunday school, chaperone student field trips, be a classroom mom, bring your tools for church clean-up day. The list could be endless. ....

Rotorua community groups are heavily reliant on a dwindling base of volunteers but one organisation has come up with a solution.
There is now a new way of accessing help via an online platform that could change the way communities connect.
Be Collective, which is supported by Rotorua Trust, the Department of Internal Affairs, and Rotorua Lakes Council, is re-imagining ways to engage, connect and give in the community in an effort to encourage more people to volunteer. ....

With a soft opening, some familiar faces are back in place at Paris Regional Medical Center as the hospital reinstates its volunteer program.
âA volunteerâs presence in a hospital gives people a peace of mind,â said Lisa House, director of Volunteer Services. âIt gives them that special touch.â
Thanks to easing Covid-19 restrictions and mass vaccinations, the volunteer program has opened back up 86 of its 122 positions. One of the conditions of coming back, though, is that everyone must be vaccinated, House said. The volunteers help guide visitors to where they need to be, manning information desks and working in the gift shop. They even sometimes wait with the families of patients as they await news from the doctor. ....

Trading Post shuts down in wake of volunteer burnout
Warkworth will miss the Wednesday sales.
Mahu Community Trading Post, on the corner of Mill Lane and Whitaker Road, will shut down permanently on June 30. Chairperson John Carr says it was a tough decision to close.
“Our team of volunteers has reached burnout point with the volume of work involved in the weekly sales. The increase in operating costs has also contributed to this decision,” he says.
The shop, which sells donated secondhand goods, has given away a total of $320,000 to community causes since opening in September 2018. John says there will still be money in the kitty for future applicants when the store closes. ....
