Press Release – Volunteering New Zealand
Volunteering New Zealand is excited to support the Minister of Health volunteer awards, now open for nominations.
“People are volunteering in all parts of the health system, including as companion volunteers in hospitals, first responders in emergencies, or providing support to those with mental health needs,” says Michelle Kitney, Chief Executive of Volunteering New Zealand.
She encourages nominations from organisations who can choose to nominate an individual volunteer or team of volunteers. Nominations could be for long-term commitment and achievement, an outstanding success, or action above and beyond the call of duty.
“Volunteers tell us they’re motivated by the intrinsic rewards of helping others, but they also deserve to be recognised publicly.”

NZ has one of the highest volunteer rates in the world but an employment lawyer says they need to know their rights.
It's National Volunteering Week and New Zealand has one of the highest volunteer rates in the world.
But an employment lawyer says volunteers need to know their rights and check that they're not in fact an employee without realising it.
Sharon Thompson lives in a housetruck in suburban Christchurch, not so much of a need for housework so more time to put into volunteering.

She drives, she fights fires and she's 71 - meet Ngāruawāhia's most senior firefighter

“Not very,” she tells
However, this hasn’t stopped her from rising up the ranks.
Mckay joined the Ngāruawāhia Fire Brigade when she was 63 after her son suggested she have a look.

Anna Mckay, 71, signed up to the Ngāruawāhia brigade when she was 63.
She had just moved to Waikato to be closer to family, but found herself living out of Ngāruawāhia on a hill. It was easy for her to just stay out there.
“I needed to get to know people ... I needed to make an effort.”
So when the brigade put out a call for people who held a Class 4 licence to drive their tanker, something Mckay had, her son Guy Beethem suggested she offer her services.

Volunteering way to get involved, give back

Moving and volunteering are part and parcel for Daphne and Geoff Ellis.
From Auckland to Invercargill, Mr and Mrs Ellis have moved eight or nine times, with a preference for smaller towns.
The longest they have spent in one place is 12 years.
When they move to a new city or town, their aim is to get involved and give back to the community – and volunteering is always the answer.
“You have to join things, like most places. They don’t come to you,” Mrs Ellis said.
When Mr Ellis heard his wife say “I’ve been thinking”, he knew they were off to a new place.
