After spending nearly two years in jail, the Indian couple convicted for 10-years in a drug trafficking case in Qatar, would soon return home after they were acquitted of the charges, a Narcotics Control Bureau official said on Tuesday.
Mohammad Shareeq and his wife Oniba Kauser Shakeel Ahmed, who were held with hashish at Qatar airport on July 6, 2019 after landing there for their honeymoon trip, are expected to arrive at Mumbai airport in the early hours of Thursday, he said.
The couple will arrive with their daughter who was born last year in prison in the Middle East nation. After the couple was convicted, Oniba s father Shakeel Ahmed had written to NCB Director General Rakesh Asthana on September 27, 2019, following which the agency started a probe into the case. ....

Thanks to a father s efforts, an Indian couple was finally able to return home on Wednesday, more than 20-months after they were sentenced to 10-year jail by a court in Qatar on drug trafficking charges.
On July 6, 2019, Mohammad Shareeq and his wife Oniba Kauser Shakeel Ahmed were arrested at Doha s Hamad International Airport by Qatar s drug enforcement agencies.
The couple was cheated by drug traffickers on the pretext of a honeymoon package in India.

The Court of Cassation, the highest court in the Qatari judicial system, has accepted the plea of a Mumbai-based couple and withheld the verdict against the couple, further ordering the appeal court to review their case. The couple was arrested and later sentenced to ten years imprisonment in 2019 for allegedly carrying 4.1 kg of hashish.
Mohammad Shareeq and Oniba Qureshi had gone to Doha for their second honeymoon. The couple was against going to Qatar but they went as Shareeq’s aunt Tabassum Riyaz Qureshi, who had sponsored their trip, insisted they go. The two were then handed a bag at the last moment by Tabassum, who claimed that it was tobacco and asked them to give it to her friend there. “The two weren’t aware that the bag consisted of 4.1 kilogram of hashish,” said Oniba’s mother Parveen. ....
