Karachi man given life imprisonment for throwing acid on woman

An anti-terrorism court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for throwing acid on a woman. In 2016, Sohail was arrested for throwing acid on a woman who refused to marry him. According to the police, the victim lost her eyesight in the attack. In a hearing on Wednesday, the suspect, identified as Sohail, was presented in the court, where he was indicted. A fine of Rs1.5 million has been imposed on him as well. It has also instructed the police to make sure the cost of the survivor s medical treatment is incurred by the government. Despite multiple laws, acid is still being openly sold at multiple shops across Sindh, a petition to ban the sale of acid at the Sindh High Court stated.
In a hearing on Wednesday, the petitioner appealed that a crackdown should be initiated against all those people selling acid in the province.
But acid is used for various purposes such as cleaning of washrooms, the judge said. To this, the petitioner pointed out that across the world, acid used for household purposes is less dangerous than that sold in Pakistan. ....

Bangladesh Nari Pragati Sangha, Jano Udyog and Human Rights Forum Bangladesh in a joint statement yesterday demanded that the body of 14-year-old deceased Lakingme Chakma be handed over to her family members immediately.
They in the statement also demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits be ensured, after bringing the case under Child Marriage Prevention Act, says a press release.
Lakingme Chakma was a seventh grader. According to her birth certificate, she was 14 years and 10 months old on January 5 when she was abducted from her home.
After 11 months and six days, police called in her father to identify his daughter s body in Cox s Bazar hospital morgue. They, however, did not hand over her body saying the girl was married to one of her abductors who managed a birth certificate that says she was 18. ....

Shanti was 14 years old when she got married. Despite being an income provider for the family, her husband continuously harassed her and her family for dowry. She suffered the abuse for 14 years after which she decided to move out of her marital home with her children. Later, her husband apologized for his behaviour and asked her to come back on the promise to change his behaviour. Convinced, she returned to his home. But to her surprise, he resumed his harassment. One morning on October 10, 2001, threw acid over her. Suffering severe burns on the face and neck, she lost vision in one eye. Acid also dissolved her one earlobe, leaving her deaf in one ear. ....
