Laser-generated “lotus effects“ can be transferred quickly to technical surfaces.A research team from industry and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology (IWS) is spinning off a high-tech company called Fusion Bionic. The company aims to offer “lotus effects” and other functional microstructures from nature to technical surfaces such as air wings and implants using laser interference technology. The team received support from Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s AHED project, which specializes in technology transfer. ....

SPIE stated, “Today, light-based technologies enable developments in a proliferating number of areas, from healthcare and high-speed communications to quantum computing, AR-VR-MR, and self-driving vehicles.”
The Startup Challenge, now in its 11th year, is an annual entrepreneurial pitch competition for new businesses that utilize optics and photonics to create innovative products, applications, or technologies, and the winning teams share from more than $85,000 in cash and other prizes.

Enhancing competitiveness in the industrial mechatronic systems sector.
TOKYO, Japan  Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) announced today it will establish the Industrial Mechatronics Systems Works as of April 1, 2021 within the premises of the company s Nagoya Works in Nagoya, Japan.
The functions which currently lay under Nagoya Works for development and manufacturing of computerized numerical controllers (CNCs), electrical discharge machines (EDMs) and laser processing machines will be transferred to the new Works, improving flexibility and speed in responding to customer needs.
The Industrial Mechatronics Systems Works will become Mitsubishi Electric s dedicated factory for industrial mechatronic products, which contribute to the manufacturing industry through automation of product and parts processing. ....
