Paulina Martina took part in Fabricademy 2020/2021 at Waag s TextileLab and FabLab. During the half a year course, participants learn state of the art tools and knowledge on digital fabrication, textile and fashion. They also get to set up their own work, project or business model. Earlier, we spoke with Fabricademy participant Sara Alvarez.
Hey Paulina! Where are you from and what have you been doing before Fabricademy?
I’m from Aruba and have been living in Europe for ten years now. I received my education in Denmark, Sweden and Canada. Recently, graduated as a fashion designer and I’m currently studying interaction design at the Haagse Hogeschool. To support this educational switch, I’ve also joined Fabricademy at Waag. ....

Digitisation of the physical public space

When talking about public spaces, we distinguish the physical public space from the digital public space. For example, during the opening session of the Public Spaces conference on 12 March, a clip was shown that described why digital public spaces are important (watch the clip at 5:25). In the current system of public platforms on the internet, these platforms are under the control of commercial companies that see citizens as objects, rather than subjects. The clip continues to tell us that the commercial nature of the digital spaces ‘is like having your passport sold whenever you visit a public library. [Or] like being allowed in a public debate centre, only if you have a specific political view.’ ....

Dr. Adriana Knouf is one of Waag’s artist in residences in 2021. Who is she, where did she come from (hint: outer space) and what is she planning to do at Waag?
Hey Adriana, welcome at Waag. You’re from the U.S. originally, right?
Well, I’m from Boston, where I work as Assistant Professor of Art and Design at Northeastern University (Boston). I mainly worked and studied there and in upstate New York.
What made you come to Europe?
One of the reasons is that in Europe, there’s more support of culture and funding for the type of research and art that I want to do. It’s a financially safe and stable position to be Assistant Professor in the U.S., but of course you have to do a lot of teaching and do service work at the university. This I enjoyed, but it leaves only the semester-free summers to work on my own research and art. The question ....
