The Sindh Assembly passed a landmark law on Friday to promote, protect and ensure the independence, impartiality, safety and freedom of expression for journalists and other media practitioners.
Pakistan ranks 145 out of 180 countries on the media rights watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) 2021 World Press Freedom Index. Reports of journalists being intimidated, threatened, beaten, abducted, harassed or even killed are not uncommon in the country, which stands as the fifth most dangerous place for the profession, according to the International Federation of Journalists.
In Sindh alone, at least one journalist has been killed in the current year. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, at least two were picked up and then released and one killed in 2020. At least 25 FIRs have reportedly been lodged against various journa ....

To promote, protect and effectively ensure the independence, impartiality, safety and freedom of expression of journalists and media professionals.
WHEREAS it is the responsibility of the State to safeguard the right to freedom of expression, as contained in Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan, 1973, as well as in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which includes the freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media;
AND WHEREAS it is the requirement of any democratic society to instill a strong culture of safety and independence of journalists, taking into consideration specific attacks on journalists and media professionals; ....
