Black Caps bring the Championship Mace to New Plymouth

A lot of New Plymouth youngsters were late for school on Thursday morning after queueing to get their photos taken with New Zealand cricket stars Ross Taylor and Will Young.
The Black Caps won the ICC World Test Championship earlier this year and are touring the country with the trophy.
The Amazing Mace tour arrived at the New Plymouth Golf Club, and Taylor and Young, who was back in his home town, were going flat tack signing cricket bats, posters and smiling at cameras. ....

Taranaki Civil sign on as Taranaki Rugby partner

Taranaki Rugby s Cole Brown and chief executive Laurence Corlett say they are thrilled to be partnering with Taranaki Civil.
Along with getting its logo on left sleeve of the Taranaki Bulls playing jersey, Taranaki Civil Construction Ltd plans to shout 1000 children to a match each year as part of its three-year deal with the region’s rugby union.
Taranaki Rugby announced the partnership, which will run until March 2024, in a joint emailed statement on Friday.
The ticket giveaway follows a similar move made by the Inglewood-based business last year when it shouted all the primary school children in the area a free ticket to watch the Yarrows Taranaki Bulls play in their backyard. ....

Pukekura Park to host Taranaki Bulls' first home game of 2021 NPC season

Rugby columnist Ian Snook is looking forward to seeing rugby played at Pukekura Park, where he often played as a NZ representative cricketer (file photo).
“It’ll be pretty impressive if we get it filled up.”
He played “many, many” games at the park during his years in the Central Districts cricket team.
“I remember in 1974 we played Australia there. There were 3000 or more people there, it was an amazing atmosphere.”
Shane McDonald, who played 118 games for Taranaki before moving into coaching and managing the team, said spectators would enjoy being up high and close to the action. ....

La Toya Mason played 70 tests for England, three Rugby World Cup finals, winning the 2014 decider, but reckons she never reached her full potential as a player.
Now back home, as Taranaki Rugby’s head of women’s rugby and with the first Chiefs women’s team as an assistant coach, the former halfback, who was born in Auckland, says she is watching the women’s game grow in ways she never could have imagined at the start of her international career in 2009. ....
