While Targa Tasmania is the big drawcard for racing enthusiasts, the lesser-known non-competition Targa Tour that runs alongside it is also gaining momentum.
Now in its 10
th year, the Tour allows participants to enjoy the same closed roads as competitors but with a 130km/h speed limit and no timing.

Targa Tasmania rally: tribunal set up to investigate crashes after three deaths

Motorsports Australia will establish a special investigatory tribunal to examine two fatal crashes in which three people died at Targa Tasmania at the weekend.
Veteran competitor Shane Navin, 68, was killed after his 1979 Mazda RX-7 rolled on Friday morning on the Lyell Highway in Tasmania’s remote west. Emergency crews were unable to revive Navin. His co-driver, Glenn Evans, escaped uninjured.
The next day, Leigh Munday, 68, from Hobart, and Queenslander Dennis Neagle, 59, died after their 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS hit a tree at Wattle Grove Road, near Cygnet, in southern Tasmania.
Targa is an annual multi-day rally held in Tasmania, where competitors race across 2,000km of public roadways. This year’s event began on 19 April. ....

The Tasmanian family of a man who was tragically killed while driving in the Targa Tasmania event on Saturday have paid tribute to their good-humoured, ever-generous, fix-anything, fondly mischievous dad.
Our dad absolutely loved Targa and was thrilled to be competing again, his three children James, Natalie and Sarah said in a statement.
We re having an impossible time.
Dad was a loving older brother to John and Katrina, fun uncle to his nieces and nephews, and beloved grandfather to his little revheads-in-training, Jack and Max. ....

Herta led 97 of the 100 laps.
Alex Palou, who won the season opener, led two while Herta was taking on fuel and
Simon Pagenaud, who finished third, led a lap at the leader’s second pit stop.
Josef Newgarden was second. Doesn’t sound all that exciting but there was some pretty good racing along the way.
Our two Canadians didn’t fare particularly well.
James Hinchcliffe of Oakville must have felt like he had a target on his car.
Takuma Sato ran into him early in the race and he had to stop to change a tire and then late in the race ....
