At the doorstep of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in Grabouw, a Temporary Disability Grant (TDG) applicant died early in the morning while standing in the excessively long line, waiting to be helped.
It is beyond tragic that a vulnerable resident does not return to their family from one of the main spaces you can go to for relief from the devastation of poverty.
Sassa is the main agency responsible for provision of our national government's safety nets for those who need them.
It falls under the Department of Social Development (DSD), led by Minister Lindiwe Zulu.

CAPE TOWN - There is some relief in sight for more than 200,000 people who are reapplying for temporary disability grants after they lapsed in December.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) on Wednesday said that people waiting for the required medical assessments to be done could apply for temporary relief of R500 a month for a maximum of two months.

The organisation said that nationally, more than 200,000 grant beneficiaries had been affected, after payments lapsed at the end of last month.

CAPE TOWN - Social Security Agency Sassa on Friday said measures have been put in place to expedite temporary disability grant re-applications.
Around 53,000 beneficiaries in the Western Cape could not receive their grant payments this month, as temporary disability grants lapsed at the end of December.
Following a doctor's recommendation, recipients now have to reapply.
SASSA said there was no way grant reapplications could be finalised last year, as the 2020 payment cycle was still active.
