Heritage officers from Queensland’s Environment Department should proactively advise communities which “worthy” character homes facing development assessment could be heritage-listed, residents are suggesting to government.
Toowong residents, led by retired Queensland Health deputy director-general John Scott, have put forward a concept where a more proactive Environment Department could help communities identify character homes early, so submissions can be forwarded to a better-resourced Queensland Heritage Council.

Pressure mounts on council over repealed environment laws

The decision to throw the laws out drew protests t the town hall.
“This threat is especially concerning on the Southside of Gympie, where housing developments are taking place in areas where koalas have been observed living,” Mr Arthur said.
“In mid 2020 the Gympie Regional Council was awarded the Queensland Keep Australia Beautiful Award for Environmental Sustainability because of the TLPIs and their Koala Conservation Management Plan.
“The present council should publicly relinquish that award, since its retention is inconsistent with cancellation of the TLPIs.
“In the absence of operating TLPIs then the dire conservation status of koalas demands that the Queensland Government extend the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy to the Gympie Region as a matter of urgency, and ultimately to the entire Wide Bay Burnett.” ....

Petition against Gympie council's law repeal cracks 26k

The petition is asking Local Government Minister Steven Miles and Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon to intervene to ensure the protection of the region’s koalas and native plants and wildlife.
In an attached form letter addressed to Mr Miles by the sites creator, a “concerned resident”, the MP is being asked to intervene under Queensland legislation which allows for urgent or direct action to be taken to protect the state’s interests.
Protesters say the repeal leaves the region with insufficient protection for its flora and fauna. Pictures: Kristen Camp
The letter states without the TLPIs in place “insufficient provisions in the Planning Scheme may significantly impact” the region’s biodiversity, coastal environment and water quality. ....

State could step in on council environmental protections

A PUSH is on for the State Government to intervene and reverse Gympie Regional Council’s controversial decision to repeal two environmental protection laws last week.
A change.org petition started by a “concerned resident” exploded yesterday with signatures soaring from around 3000 to more than 17,000 as of 5pm.
It has called on State Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon and Planning Minister Steven Miles to step in as “there is now no protection for wildlife and wildlife habitat on private land in the Gympie region other than the small parcels of land covered by state government vegetation management legislation”.
Protesters gathered outside Gympie Town hall last week to challenge the council’s decision. ....

'They show who runs Gympie': FB page defends shock posts

SHOCKING images and words posted on a Facebook page apparently run by former Gympie councillor Daryl Dodt have been defended as satirical and necessary to highlight criticism of those in power.
A post made early this morning on the Gympie Region s Future: Temporarily On Hold page defended the posts, and the subsequent fallout, as the end justifying the means, and blamed cancel culture for those purporting to be offended.
It is not known exactly who wrote the post
If politically satirical cartoons are gonna cause such uproar, at least it will draw attention to who is actually at the helm of our region (and I don t mean the Mayor and councillors). ....
