Governor signs sweeping mental health bills to advance help for Coloradans after pandemic

Gov. Jared Polis signed two bipartisan mental health bills Thursday aimed at advancing help for Coloradans who are struggling to cope, especially under the threat the pandemic has on their jobs and lives.
One bill creates a new state agency and the other seeks to step in before suicides and deliver meaningful help for individuals and families to make sure there s not another attempt.
You delivered, Polis said to those assembled online for the bill signing. Working together, our state is making enormous progress to put patients first, ahead of the bureaucracy.
He thanked the hundreds of people who spent thousands of hours working on the issue the past two years, which lead to Thursday s bill signing. ....

Governor's Suicide Prevention Commission Recommends Changes To Reduce Suicide Rate

Michigan’s Suicide Prevention Commission published its first full report, recommending steps that the authors said would decrease the number of suicide attempts and deaths in the state.
“We must act now,” Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the state’s chief medical executive, wrote. “The preventable nature of suicide makes Michigan’s current suicide rates unacceptable.”
In 2019, the most recent year for which the commission said there was complete data, almost 1,500 people died by suicide in Michigan, and the rate of death had increased 28% in the previous decade.
Commission co-chair Brian Ahmedani, who also directs research into behavioral health services at Henry Ford Health System, said the last 20 years of research have fundamentally changed the way people in his field view suicide prevention. ....

A majority Labor Government would form a Suicide Prevention Commission to help identify and understand the factors and systematic issues that may contribute to suicide risk.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said funding of $1 million a year would be given to the Commissioner to help government better understand the issues facing Tasmanians.
“The Commissioner will make recommendations to government about the actions and strategies relevant to past and any future deaths by suicide,” Ms White said. ....
